The party is coming. But at what price?

With its decision to award the EM 2024 to Germany, the Uefa is playing it safe. But is that also good for German football?

Not a minute after Nyon’s decision, DFL President Reinhard Rauball had already sent his press release into the world – with the usual „a good day for German football“ on such occasions. The declaration had of course long been prepared, the decision of the Uefa to award the European Championship 2024 to Germany could not surprise anyone.

„I feel the responsibility“, said DFB boss Reinhard Grindel after the 12:4 vote of the Uefa executive. He must have felt the additional relief. After all, today’s public day had also been turned into something like a judgement about Grindel’s presidency. The EM application was a matter for the DFB’s boss – an award for Turkey would have been a setback that Grindel might not have survived in office. „Personnel discussions are superfluous“, he said after the decision. Nevertheless, they did exist.

With its vote, the Uefa has certainly decided in favour of the number. Germany has the infrastructure, the stadiums will be full under guarantee. In addition, the subsequent use of the arenas is guaranteed in all cases. There are white elephants, i.e. stadiums that stand unused in the area after the tournament like foreign bodies and dawn on their decay, in the Ukraine or Brazil, in Germany they will not exist. Internationally, one still enjoys the reputation of a country that can organize.

The Executive Committee has also spared itself the debate as to whether a tournament can be held in a country where the human rights issue arises. It would inevitably have flared up if the organisation of a European Championship had been entrusted to Erdogan’s presidential system. So far, international football officials have not given priority to human rights issues. And one can already speculate about whether the decision would have been the same if Turkey had not got into currency turbulences. In Germany, on the other hand, the Uefa can be sure that it will end up with a plus.

The Uefa is spared the human rights debate

But at least the issue of freedom of expression and freedom of the press appears in the Uefa evaluation report on the European Championship applicants as a minus point for Turkey, which would not have happened before. The hope that the awarding of a major sporting event could help soften the hardships of a regime has now proved to be an illusion anyway, whether in China or Russia. Qatar will be the next example.

In Germany the officials are cheering, Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer speaks of a „great success“, Bavaria boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge states: „This will certainly look good on German football“. In general, the tenor is clear and could already be heard from the Bundesliga everywhere in the previous days: According to BVB Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke, this decision will „be good for football as a whole“.

Will the amateurs have to suffer?

But that has yet to be seen. In any case, there is a danger that in the coming years almost everything at the DFB will be geared towards the „lighthouse project“ EM 2024. The remaining resources of the association will be directed towards the development of the academy. It is doubtful whether amateurs, women’s football, anti-racism projects – more important than ever after the fall of Özil – or integration issues will still be raised. One wants to celebrate „a gigantic celebration with whole Europe“, said delegation leader Philipp Lahm, from now on OK boss of the EM. After the SPIEGEL revelations about the World Cup affair, the association with the 2006 summer fairy tale is no longer so casual and relaxed. Major sporting projects have finally lost their splendour, in Germany but also elsewhere. Too often and too much they are now inextricably linked with gigantism, corruption, building sins, commercial overkill and nepotism. There was still no sign of EM fever around the decision in the country. Joy yes, euphoria no. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Joachim Löw, who had travelled to Nyon and presented the application to the Executive Committee together with Lahm, said afterwards: „Now we are very happy“. When has he been able to say that this year?

The lame figure of German football

World champion, honorary match captain, now EM-OK boss: Philipp Lahm’s rise in German football continues. He can hardly defend himself against the Beckenbauer parallels.

Shortly after the redeeming decision, Philipp Lahm was all Philipp Lahm again. He only allowed himself a hug with DFB boss Reinhard Grindel, then he had the etiquette in mind again: „If you win, as an athlete I’ve always found, there’s somebody who loses. And you also have to pay respect to the losers again and again“, he explained his subdued form of joy. Typically lame. Never fall out of the role, always keep the form. But the 34-year-old has also done well with this so far.

Today the former Bavaria professional has climbed the next step on the career ladder. He was already world champion and DFB captain, he is now also honorary captain of the national team, and now almost everyone already sees him as the future DFB president.

As the head of the delegation for the European Championship application, he has given up his sovereign role, which he is known for, he has not stepped on anyone’s feet, he has not alienated anyone in the Uefa in advance. Next to Grindel, the association’s head, who always seems awkward, it may not be difficult to shine. But the award of the European Championship 2024 to Germany is now closely connected with the name Philipp Lahm.

Cross-references to Beckenbauer

He can hardly resist the cross-references to another great Bavarian and DFB captain. Franz Beckenbauer is more present these days than he has been for years. Not personally, but the former figure of light has been afraid of the public since the SPIEGEL revelations about the World Cup affair. But his name is haunting the media. Beckenbauer, who first became world champion as a player and then brought a big tournament to Germany. Just like Lahm.

The Deutsche Presse-Agentur already calls Lahm „Kaiserchen“. That sounds more disrespectful than admiring, but Lahm is actually on the way to playing a role in football like Beckenbauer once did. Not as nonchalant as the emperor, but always striving for correctness, but just as determined and ambitious as his famous predecessor.

Lameness and career planning have always belonged together very closely. As a player, he placed his public statements in conscious timing in close consultation with his advisor Roman Grill. If he ever became critical, it was never from his gut, but always in order to pursue a specific purpose. In 2009, he gave the „Süddeutsche Zeitung“ a remarkable interview in which he criticised the club management as much as it could tolerate. Since then he has been considered a responsible professional.

In his autobiography, he criticised those who could no longer harm him or FC Bayern. He caused the necessary public attention by pre-printing in the „Bild“ newspaper, the alleged scandal book was also a choreographed step, the responsible persons at FC Bayern and DFB had been able to see the manuscript in advance. When the opportunity arose at the 2010 World Cup to take over the captainship of the national team from the injured Michael Ballack, Lahm seized the opportunity. He did not give up the bandage, Ballack was outside.

He deliberately gave the Bavarians a basket

His resignation from the national team, a week after his 2014 World Cup triumph, which surprised everyone, only unfolded its full significance in retrospect. As if Lahm had been the only one to suspect at the time that a zenith had been reached for this team and that it was now gradually going downhill. He also ended his active career at FC Bayern in good time.

Everyone expected him afterwards in the management of the Munich, Lahm, however, was again a train of thought further. Very well knowing that one can win nothing against Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as third. The Bavarian bosses preferred to find a tame sports director like Hasan Salihamidzic. Check this out to know more about Jumba Bet Casino.

In the public eye, Lahm cultivates the image of the man without a corner or an edge, wise guy, class leader, that’s what he’s called. His tweets are usually banal up to the pain threshold. When ARD proudly engaged him at the World Cup in Russia as its model expert and successor to Mehmet Scholl, he confined himself to commonplaces, flatter than the shore zone of Lake Tegern from which ARD broadcast Lahm’s chats. The station, which had expected Kernigeres, ended the cooperation after the tournament. Lahm had instead placed his naturally well-measured criticism of the national coach in the LinkedIn career network.

Football like a Simpsons satire

VfB Stuttgart is in crisis. The new players are seeking their place in the system, the old their form. This raises questions about coach Tayfun Korkut – and about the club’s transfer policy.

The Simpsons are known for satirising reality in a relentless way. In a famous scene, the creators take on football: During a match, the defenders pass the ball to each other until the annoyed audience stormed the pitch.

VfB Stuttgart turned this persiflage into reality at the 0:2 against RB Leipzig. VfB-Verteidiger matched VfB-Verteidiger, who matched the goalkeeper, who matched the defender again. VfB played 28 passes in a row in the 20th minute, without ever leaving their own half. After more than a minute, this cross pass orgy ended with a long blow from six-man Dennis Aogo. The ball landed in the side out.

This scene symbolizes the crisis at VfB Stuttgart. In the last second half of the season, under coach Tayfun Korkut, they stormed to the top of the table with breathtakingly fast football. Now they are playing football, which the Simpsons made fun of twenty years ago.

Actually, Korkut’s idea of a game looks different. Conquering the ball in midfield, fitting directly into the top: That was Stuttgart’s formula for success in the second half of the season. The double six in the 4-4-2 system should win the ball. After the conquest of the ball, it should go fast: The outside strikers move into the middle, they are supposed to serve striker Mario Gómez. The 78-times national player has his strengths in counterattacking and as a rough-and-tumble in the penalty area.

Exactly this idea does not work this season. Stuttgart’s previous opponents focused themselves on the counterattack and overplayed the midfield with long balls. Against Mainz (0:1), Freiburg (3:3) and Düsseldorf (0:0) Stuttgart did not find their own game. Even RB Leipzig withdrew behind the centre line in their 2-0 win and left Stuttgart to take the ball.

  • UEFA European Under-21 Championship: 2009

  • Silbernes Lorbeerblatt: 2010

Stuttgart’s weak switching game is not only related to the opponents. The SPIX shows how much Stuttgart’s key players are lagging behind their form. Dennis Aogo? Conquers hardly any balls in central midfield. Preparer Thommy? Didn’t shoot a single goal against Leipzig and only managed four passes in the opposing half. Gómez? Came in three of five season games on a SPIX under 10.

Korkuts problem: There are no alternatives, neither tactical nor personnel. Against Leipzig he distanced himself from the usual 4-4-2 system, the VfB played from a diamond with Thommy as ten behind two points. Offensively, the attackers lacked any connection to the game, as the 28 passes in their own half impressively prove.

Defensively Stuttgart revealed gaps in the new system on the wings. Korkuts system change washed two entries into the starting eleven. But neither right-back Pablo Maffeo nor left-back Borna Sosa convinced. A prominent newcomer was not even used: Gonzalo Castro. Korkut tested him in the first games both in the center and on the wing. On no position he convinced.

The poor integration of the newcomers does not only cast a spotlight on the coach. Sports director Michael Reschke has also been criticised for his transfer policy. In fact, the team lacks a strong six player to lead the build-up. Aogo was overburdened with this role against Leipzig. The poisonous Argentinian Santiago Ascacíbar convinces with his aggressiveness in the game against the ball, but not in the game structure. So VfB created only moments of Simpsonesque comedy from the game structure, but not goal danger.

Stuttgart makes it easy for the opponents. You know: We can leave Stuttgart to the ball, the VfB plays anyway only harmless cross passes. The next opponent is Werder Bremen Will Bremen’s Korkut, who started the season with a surprisingly strong start, do the favours of opening rooms for counterattacks? Unlikely. It’s quite possible that Stuttgart will again set new records: for most passes without gaining space. Kozmo Casino is one of the newest online casino gaming site.
