What’s New For 2011?
ALL PROPERTY OWNERS WILL RECEIVE AN ANNUAL ASSESSMENT.
A new law requires the Assessor’s office to send all owners of real property an assessment notice each year.
•
THE ANNUAL ASSESSMENT NOTICE WILL HAVE A NEW FORMAT.
The Georgia Department of Revenue will design a new annual assessment notice that will be used in all 159 counties. (See proposed new notice below).
PROPERTY OWNERS CAN SELECT FROM FOUR METHODS OF APPEALING AN ASSESSMENT NOTICE:
1. A property owner may appeal matters of value, uniformity or denial of
exemption, to the Board of Equalization followed by appeal to superior court.
2. An appeal by arbitration can be filed on the grounds of valuation with no appeal to superior court.
3. A parcel of non-homestead property with a FMV in excess of $1million may be appealed to a hearing officer followed by an appeal to the superior court.
4. Appeal can be filed directly to superior court with the consent of the Board of Assessors.
AN ESTIMATE OF THE TAX BILL WILL NOW BE AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR ASSESSMENT NOTICE.
This is only an estimate; your tax bill may be more or less depending on the millage rate set by the Board of Commissioners, county school board and city councils.
